Company Provides Comprehensive Best Offer to Settle

Negotiations

January 6th, 2022

Includes Largest Wage Investment in History

After more than a week since our initial comprehensive offer to try and engage your union to bargain in good faith and reach a settlement peacefully, today King Soopers/City Market presented UFCW Local 7 a Comprehensive Best Offer to Settle for Retail Clerks and Meat. The company has put its best foot forward, offering the largest investment in King Soopers/City Market history.

We listened and increased our initial offer! We are proud of our Comprehensive Best Offer to Settle. In fact, our total new wage and ratification bonus investment is the largest in King Soopers/City Market history and represents an additional investment in you of more than $148 million over three years vs. our original offer of four years.

More Pay and Increased Ratification Bonus

We’ve improved our offer on wages and ratification bonuses:

  • Top-rate associates: We value our tenured associates and want to reward you for your loyalty. Our offer includes a $1.00 per hour increase in year one, $.80 per hour increase in year two and year three for all top-rate associates except courtesy clerks. (This proposal would increase top-rate wages by $2.60 per hour over the life of the contract.)

  • Ratification bonus for ALL associates: We have proposed to change the first-time ratification bonus – doubling the amount from our original offer and on years of service.
    • $4,000 – any associate with 10 or more years of service with the company who is an active associate upon ratification.
    • $2,000 – any associate with less than 10 years of service with the company who is an active associate upon ratification.

  • Starting rates: To further help hire quality applicants and retain our valued associates, we are proposing to increase starting rates for new hires to $16 per hour in ALL marketing areas, including Denver City, Greater Denver, Non-Denver, and City Market. (This new starting wage includes Colorado Springs, Grand Junction, Ft. Collins, Greely, and Pueblo stores.)
  • Associates in progressions: Reaffirmed our commitment for up to a $4.50 per hour increase for associates in the wage scales in the first year of the contract based on progression and classification.
    • Associates in progressions would continue to see meaningful increases through the life of the contract based on hours worked and time.

Health Care Benefits

We know health care benefits are important to you now more than ever. Your health and wellbeing are important to the company, too.

  • In our Comprehensive Best Offer to Settle, the company is proposing to contribute an additional $13 million over three years to the Rocky Mountain Union and Employers Health Benefit Fund to meet projections on potential health care cost increases.
  • That’s in addition to the $72 million annual company contribution that we proposed in our original offer.
  • Bottom line: Based on consultant current projections, this would mean no changes to your affordable, top-quality benefits for the next three years which means by the end of the agreement if ratified, your weekly contributions would not have increased in more than a decade! That’s unheard of in today’s market.
  • Eligible associates will continue to pay just $7.50 a week for individual coverage and $23 for family coverage. By comparison, the Colorado average per week for individual coverage is $32 and $117 for family coverage, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.

Pension

  • The company would maintain our current contributions to the Rocky Mountain Pension Fund that would provide associates with a stable and more secure retirement benefit.

What’s next?

  • We hope the union gives you the opportunity to vote on our Comprehensive Best Offer to Settle offer instead of calling for a strike.
  • We believe you should have the right to vote on this offer before being asked to strike and risk losing your paycheck and future benefits. Keep in mind that our offer of ratification bonuses for all associates expires on January 16.
  • Remember: if Local 7 calls for a strike, you have rights. You can choose to work or strike – the decision is yours to make. Do what’s right for you and your family. Your store leader has more information on your rights during a strike.

We will remain open so customers can have access to fresh food. We will continue to provide open and transparent updates that will be shared in huddles and updates on this website 24/7, or FEED and on store bulletin boards. If you have any questions, please talk to your store leader, or email your questions to laborquestions@kingsoopers.com.
